Through Sisterhood: Monthly Focus

Each month we walk one step of the HEARTS journey together — growing in Hope, Empowerment, Advocacy, and Resilience Through Sisterhood. These monthly reflections offer simple ways for women of veterans to care for themselves, support one another, and move forward with strength and understanding.

The HEARTS Framework

Wherever you are in the journey, you belong here.

March Focus: Advocacy

Advocacy is about learning to use our voice — for ourselves, for our families, and for one another. This month we focus on boundaries, resources, and taking small steps toward confident action.

Simple ways to practice advocacy this month

Have one honest conversation you’ve been avoiding
For example, telling someone how something has been affecting you, or calmly addressing a situation you’ve been staying quiet about.

Ask for help with something you usually carry alone
This could be asking a friend to watch the kids for an hour, asking your partner to handle an appointment, or simply telling someone you’re overwhelmed.

Share a helpful resource with another HEARTS sister
If you’ve found something that helped you — a counselor, support group, article, book, or local program — pass it along to someone who might need it.

Set one small boundary that protects your time or energy
This might mean saying “not right now,” turning down something you don’t have the capacity for, or protecting time you need to rest.

“What support would help you most right now?”

February Focus: Empowerment

Empowerment is about rediscovering the strength that already lives within us. As women who walk beside veterans, we often spend so much energy supporting others that we forget our own voice and capacity. This month we focus on confidence, identity, and remembering that our voice matters too.

Simple ways to practice empowerment this month

Speak one need out loud
For example, asking for help with something you normally handle alone, telling someone you need a break, or expressing what would make a situation easier for you.

Reconnect with something that reminds you who you are
This could be a hobby, a creative outlet, time outdoors, reading, prayer, or anything that helps you reconnect with yourself beyond the role of caregiving.

Acknowledge one strength you carry
Maybe it’s patience, resilience, compassion, leadership, or the ability to keep going even when things are hard. Take a moment to recognize the strength you bring to your family and your community.

Encourage another HEARTS sister
Sometimes empowerment grows when we remind each other of the strength we see. Send a message, leave a comment, or check in with someone who might need encouragement.

January Focus: Hope

Hope is where the journey begins. For many women walking beside veterans, hope is not always loud or obvious. Sometimes it’s simply the quiet belief that tomorrow can be better than today. This month we focus on renewal, steady footing, and remembering that we are not walking this road alone.

Simple ways to practice hope this month

Start one small habit that supports your well-being
This could be taking a short walk, writing a few thoughts in a journal, spending a few quiet minutes in prayer, or stepping outside for fresh air.

Notice one moment of good each day
Even on difficult days, there are small moments of light — a conversation, a quiet breath, a laugh, or a moment of peace.

Reconnect with something that brings you strength
A favorite verse, music that lifts you, time in nature, or reaching out to a trusted friend.

Give yourself permission to begin again
Hope doesn’t require perfection. It simply invites us to take the next step forward.
